The Missouri Department of Natural Resources issued a final Missouri Hazardous Waste Management Facility Part I Permit for the Missouri Pressed Metals Inc. facility. These permits require the company to continue performing post-closure and corrective action activities at its Sedalia facility.

Please be aware that any parties adversely affected or aggrieved by the department’s decision to issue the final Part I Permit, or specific conditions of the Part I Permit, may be entitled to pursue an appeal before the Administrative Hearing Commission by filing a written petition by June 27, 2025, as more fully described on page 6 of the final Part I Permit.

The Missouri Pressed Metals Inc. facility is located at 1200 E. Boonville Rd. in Sedalia, Missouri. Since 1973, Missouri Pressed Metals has operated a specialty manufacturing company at the site, producing bushings and bearings of sintered metal. Until 1995, raw 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA) was used in the vapor degreaser. Between 1973 and 1985, spent 1,1,1-TCA/ waste oil was used as a herbicide along the east and north sides of the building for weed control. Initial investigations confirmed the soil and groundwater were contaminated with 1,1,1-TCA and related compounds. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources designated this area as a regulated hazardous waste land disposal unit. The department accepted Missouri Pressed Metals' closure certification for the unit in 1997; however, Missouri Pressed Metals is subject to the permitting requirements of the Missouri Hazardous Waste Management Law and federal Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments for post-closure care because hazardous waste remained in place after closure.

Missouri Pressed Metals has been conducting post-closure and corrective action activities at the site under a department-issued Missouri Hazardous Waste Management Facility Part I Permit. On Sept. 14, 2023, Missouri Press Metals submitted a permit application to the department to renew and update its hazardous waste permit. After a thorough technical review of the permit application and opportunity for public comment on the draft permit, the department issued a final Part 1 Permit. The final permit requires Missouri Pressed Metals to continue operating a groundwater extraction system and monitoring the groundwater.

The pubic can review an electronic copy of the final Part I Permit below. Paper copies of the final permit and supporting documents are available during normal business hours at the Sedalia Public Library, 311 W. Third St., Sedalia, MO, during their normal business hours, or the department's, Elm Street Conference Center, Jefferson City, MO. An Open Records/ Sunshine Law Request will need to be submitted to review or obtain copies of the department's files.
